I’m always excited when new healthy products come out. When I had an e-mail about a new range of freeze dried snacks, Nothing But, dropped into my e-mail, I was happy to try them out.
Freeze drying isn’t something I’ve thought much about – but the leaflets that came with the package quickly taught me all about the process.
Basically, fruit is selected, frozen when fresh to lock in nutrients, chopped into bite sized pieces and then the ice crystals are removed through freeze drying.
Each of these sachets count towards one of your five a day and are all really low calorie. Most of them are less than 45 calories, apart from the pea and sweetcorn one which is 76 calories a packet.
They come in six different flavours, three fruit flavours and three vegetable flavours:
- Apple and Fig
- Strawberry and Banana
- Pineapple and Grape
- Beetroot and Parsnip
- Pea and Sweetcorn
- Mange Tout and Red Pepper
If you’ve never tried anything freeze dried before, it’s basically like a light, dry snack. It’s crispy and almost chalky in texture. It reminds me of those shrimp and banana foam sweets you can get!
My favourite one was the grape and pineapple version. I wasn’t a massive fan of the vegetable varieties, I think this was down to the texture of them suiting sweet things rather than savoury things. They weren’t awful, but just not for me!
If you’re looking for a natural snack thats suitable for vegetarians and vegans, then you should try this out.
As I said, they are very light – it’s not something that’s going to really fill you up but if you’re in one of those moods where you can’t stop eating even though you’re not busy, reach for a packet of these rather than a chocolate bar and packet of crisps!
