Understanding Treadmill Workouts
What are Treadmill Workouts?
Treadmill workouts are essentially structured exercise routines that you perform on a treadmill. They can range from casual walks to high-intensity interval training (HIIT). The beauty of treadmill workouts is their versatility; they can be tailored to fit your fitness level, heart rate, and weight loss goals.
Why Treadmill Workouts?
Good news to all treadmill users: Treadmill workouts are an excellent way to get your heart pumping and burn calories in a controlled environment. They also offer the flexibility to be done at your own pace, making them perfect for people of all fitness levels. With the ability to adjust speed and incline, you can customise your workout to target different muscles and achieve specific fitness goals. You can do sprint intervals, a light jog or even a slow walk. There are many ways to get a good workout and change the intensity of your workout by changing the speed settings or incline level.
The Fundamentals of the Best Treadmill Workouts
High-Intensity Interval Training
High-Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, is a workout strategy that alternates periods of intense exercise with periods of lower intensity or rest. It’s a great way to burn fat, improve cardiovascular fitness, and boost endurance in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional steady-state workouts.
Speed and Incline
Altering the speed and incline of your treadmill can help you burn more calories and challenge your body. Higher speeds and steeper inclines demand more from your body, resulting in a more intense workout and greater fat loss.
Strength Training
Although commonly associated with cardio, treadmills can also be used for strength training. By adjusting the incline and adding walking lunges, side steps, or even push-ups, you can target your upper and lower body muscles.

The Best Treadmill Workouts for Different Goals
For Weight Loss
Treadmill workouts can be highly effective for weight loss. They can help you burn calories, increase your metabolic rate, and maintain lean muscle mass, all of which contribute to fat loss.
For Beginners
For beginners, starting with a simple, steady pace walk or jog is the best way to get acquainted with the treadmill. As your fitness improves, you can gradually incorporate more challenging workouts like HIIT and incline intervals.
For Runners
For experienced runners, treadmill workouts can provide a controlled environment to work on speed, endurance, and technique. You can also simulate race conditions, like hills and tempo runs, regardless of the weather outside.
Creating Your Own Treadmill Workout
Developing your own customised treadmill workout can make your exercise routine more enjoyable and effective. Consider your fitness goals, current fitness level, and personal preferences when designing your treadmill workout. You can mix and match different workout styles, speeds, and inclines to create a unique routine.
Tips for Effective Treadmill Workouts
Warm-Up
Never underestimate the power of a good warm-up. It prepares your body for the workout ahead, increases your core body temperature, and reduces the risk of injury.
Cool Down
After a hard workout, it’s important to cool down. This helps to gradually lower your heart rate and can also aid in workout recovery.
Hydration
Staying hydrated is vital during any workout, and treadmill workouts are no exception. Be sure to have a bottle of water handy to keep you hydrated throughout your session.
Form and Technique
Maintaining good form and technique during your treadmill workout is crucial. Keep your back straight, use your arms, and avoid holding onto the handrails unless absolutely necessary.
Common Treadmill Workout Mistakes
Avoid these common treadmill workout mistakes to ensure you’re getting the most out of your session.
Skipping the Warm-Up or Cool Down
Skipping your warm-up or cool down can increase your risk of injury and make your workout less effective. Always take the time to properly prepare your body before you start, and allow it to recover afterwards.
Holding onto the Handrails
Holding onto the handrails can interfere with your natural running or walking motion, and can make your workout less effective. Try to keep your arms at a 90-degree angle and use them to propel you forward.
Not Varying Your Workouts
Doing the same treadmill workout day in and day out can lead to a plateau in your fitness progress. Be sure to vary your workouts to keep challenging your body and keep things interesting.

My favourite effective treadmill workout
I love doing a quick 30-minute workout on the treadmill. I find it’s a great way to improve your cardiovascular health efficiently. I love doing HIIT workouts (high-intensity interval training) on them. There are a few different ones I do.
- Run for 60 seconds, then walk for 60 seconds and repeat
- Spring in short bursts of 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds
- Run at a faster pace than normal for 45 seconds, and rest time for 15 seconds
- Spring for 20 seconds and run at a comfortable pace for 40 seconds
I also sometimes incorporate weights into treadmill work. For example, run on the treadmill for two minutes then do a circuit of 3 kettlebell exercises or other weight exercises and repeat. There are many different workouts you can do. You need to find a sustainable treadmill workout plan to succeed. I always get the best results when it’s something fast-paced to keep my mind occupied. There are some days when I am in the mood to just run at the same pace for 20 minutes, and there are others where I can only face a brisk walk but I still try to make myself work by walking on a steep incline.
Whether you’re looking to lose weight, increase your fitness level, or mix up your workout routine, treadmill workouts offer a versatile and convenient solution that gives you a great calorie burn and keeps your cardiovascular system working hard.
