3 Things Your Eyes Reveal About Your Health

The appearance of your eyes says more about your health than you know. Indeed, they are the window to the soul but also indicators of your well-being. The eyes are sensitive and complex structures connected to various systems in the body via nerves and blood vessels. Therefore, any changes or abnormalities in the eyes are often an early sign of a problem in another body part. While these are significant concerns, a survey revealed that 8% of people have never had their eyes checked. If you identify with this group, this post will illuminate why you should.

  1. Lighter eye colour linked to age-related macular degeneration

People usually admire lighter eye colours, such as blue or green, because of their rarity. However, research has shown that people with lighter eyes are more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration as they age. According to science, this occurs due to less pigmentation in lighter-coloured eyes. It is also due to the ability of more light to penetrate through than usual. Age-related macular degeneration is the loss of central vision. While there is no specific cause for this problem, scientists say there are contributory factors. Lighter eye colour, genetics, environmental factors, and even diet may play different roles in developing age-related macular degeneration. When the linkage to lighter eyes was first made, it generated a lot of debate. Over the years, however, coupled with the high incidence among the older population with lighter eyes, research has proven credible. Therefore, if you are more than fifty-five years old with lighter-coloured eyes, you should check them often to reduce risks.

  1. Persistently red or bloodshot eyes

If your eyes are constantly bloodshot, there may be more to know about your health. It could be an infection or allergy. It is advisable to seek an expert to help resolve the problem if it is an infection. On the other hand, you may require allergy treatment if constantly bloodshot eyes come with persistent sneezing and common cold. Data shows that 26% of adults in the UK have allergic rhinitis, which often presents with burning red eyes.

In some cases, red eyes may be treated with over-the-counter drops or ointments, while more serious conditions may require prescription medication. A lifestyle modification may be necessary for certain situations to stop further irritation. Ignoring persistent red or bloodshot eyes can lead to the progression of an underlying condition. Knowing what you are dealing with is better before things get out of hand. Good eye health can improve your quality of life at any stage.

  1. Yellowing of the whites

A more known condition for this is jaundice which is often common among newborns. However, few people know it is also a sign of a problem with your liver. When red blood cells are broken down, they release a yellowish pigment that goes through the liver.

Unfortunately, when this organ fails to properly process bilirubin, it shows in the eyes. Liver problems are not health conditions to ignore. Toxin buildup in your body is an issue to be concerned about if you want an improved quality of life. The longer you wait, the harder it may be to treat. Therefore, when you notice a discolouration of your eyes, remember to seek immediate medical care before things get out of hand.
