Health Check-Ins You Maybe Wouldn’t Think Of

Health Check-Ins You Maybe Wouldn’t Think Of

It’s all well and good to keep an eye on the big stuff—your annual GP visit, that dreaded dentist appointment, maybe even a mental health tune-up when life gets a bit wobbly. But how many of us remember to look after those little corners of our wellbeing that never quite make the list? You know, the stuff that doesn’t scream “URGENT!” but might silently impact your day-to-day comfort (and sanity). Intrigued? Read on for some reminders about those health check-ins you might be overlooking.

1. The Underfoot Audit

When was the last time you gave your feet a moment of your undivided attention? Our poor trotters work tirelessly from dawn until dusk, yet most of us just shove them into the nearest pair of trainers without a second thought. If you’re struggling with lingering aches, calluses, or suspicious toenail happenings, it’s time for a foot MOT. Treat yourself to decent insoles, moisturise those heels, or see a podiatrist if things look grim. The payoff? Fewer blisters, comfier walks, and a smug sense of “Yes, I have model feet now.”

2. The Sunglasses Check-Up

Believe it or not, your sunnies can suffer from wear and tear as well. Scratches, loose screws, and out-of-date prescriptions are more common than you might think (especially if you spend half the summer flinging them onto the dashboard). If your lenses have seen better days, consider getting a sunglasses reglaze. Proper, unscratched lenses that actually block UV rays mean your eyes stay protected—and you’ll look 10 times cooler doing it.

3. The Spine and Posture Patrol

Hands up if you’ve ever found yourself hunched over your phone like a stressed-out turtle. Don’t worry, you’re not alone—“tech neck” is an official phenomenon now. Over time, poor posture can lead to all sorts of aches and pains, from tension headaches to grumpy shoulders. Make a conscious effort to sit up straighter (cue your mum’s voice in your head), adjust your workspace ergonomics, and consider a quick posture check-up with a physio if you’ve been ignoring chronic discomfort.

4. Ears, Glorious Ears

Sure, you’ll have the odd hearing test at school or during your routine medical checks—but how often do we really pay attention to our lugholes? Blocked ears can make you feel like you’re living in an echo chamber, and constant earphone use (guilty as charged) can contribute to longer-term hearing issues. If your hearing suddenly goes AWOL or you’re a serial earbud abuser, maybe have a professional poke around in there. You might be shocked (and slightly horrified) at what earwax can do.

5. The Bra and Underwear Overhaul

Let’s face it—life’s too short to wear uncomfortable underwear. If you’re constantly fiddling with straps or readjusting the band, it might be time for a proper fitting. The same goes for boxers, briefs, or any other intimate apparel that’s seen better days. Ill-fitting undergarments can lead to back pain, restricted breathing, and general grumpiness. Getting measured (or at least upgrading to comfy, supportive options) can do wonders for your mood and posture.

6. Mental Health Micro-Moments

Finally, let’s not forget those small, daily mental health check-ins. No, you don’t have to sign up for a week-long mindfulness retreat, but a few minutes spent journalling, meditating, or simply sipping tea in silence can work wonders. It’s about building mini-habits that help you step back from the daily chaos and give your brain a chance to breathe.

Get checked, be healthy!
