Getting Used To Lifestyle Changes

Getting Used To Lifestyle Changes

AD| There are many reasons you might need to make a change in your life. From supporting your physical health to promoting your mental health, to simply wanting to do something different, change happens all the time! But even in making a conscious decision to change something, it can be hard to adjust, and you can slip back into old habits because of it.

But getting used to a lifestyle change isn’t impossible, and it’s something you’re totally capable of. And with the ideas below, you might just be able to smooth the way for yourself before you even implement the change you’re planning!

Getting Used To Lifestyle Changes

Learn to Laugh at Yourself

Mistakes can and will happen, but they’re not there to instantly set you back and make you start from square one again. Life isn’t a game show, and you can always pick up where you left off! Most importantly, if you learn to laugh the mistake off, you won’t even need a day or two to feel bad about the slip up either.

Make The Change Easy to Forget About

Out of sight, out of mind! It’s much easier to adjust to something when you can put it out of your head. Now, this is most crucial in cases of a health and wellness change. For example, if you need to start wearing braces for the good of your oral health, opting for Invisalign braces instead will help you to focus less on the change while still committing to it.

If you’re able to take the easy road, don’t feel bad about opting for it – your health isn’t an achievement, and you deserve to be able to take care of it. And small changes you can put to the back of your mind, such as swapping sugar in your coffee for sweeteners instead, are always going to win out.

Break Down Your Thought Process

What’s holding you back from fully accepting a change? What is it that makes a change so scary? Once you understand these things, it’s a lot, lot easier to take on a new thing in life without feeling the guilt or apprehension that usually comes along with it! If you know why you think the way you do about making changes to your lifestyle, you’ll be able to filter the anxiety out, and focus on what it really is that you need.

This is easiest to do with the help of a therapist, especially if you take up a CBT program. If you feel that you really struggle to beat back the doubt in your head, or you immediately jump to the worst case scenario, restructuring your thought process is often the best way forward.

Getting used to lifestyle changes is a big deal, and you should never feel bad about hesitating or ‘failing’ a few times over. Just stick to the change if it’s for the better, see what kind of support you can get with it, and then just laugh things off!
