Fitness Update // At least make it count



In last week’s fitness update, I did warn that I’d only be doing one workout due to my working pattern and having plans.

Having less time often means you have to make the workouts really count. It can be easy to go to the gym, walk on a treadmill for a bit or cycle at a steady pace. Thing is, if you’re not pushing hard and getting your heart rate up, you’re probably not making the most of your workouts. Of course, it’s better to do something rather than nothing, but when you’re limited on time, make each minute count.

I’ve been doing this a lot lately on the spin bike. Having a heart rate monitor helps you hold yourself accountable. I know if my heart rate is over 160, I’m working hard. When it gets into the 170’s, I’m really going for it. Anything under 150’s isn’t that much of and effort, so I try to stay in the 160’s by adding intensity or speed.

So that’s what my workout last week was about.

This week should be easier as long as I get myself to bed on time. I have consistent shifts so finish at either 3 or 4 every day. I’m aiming to get to the gym at least 3 times across the week. I’m busy at the weekend so can’t get a workout in Saturday or Sunday. Doom.

Fitness Update // Spin Week

Last week was much better! Kidney infection is cured!

I went to the gym on Tuesday before work and did 40 minutes of spinning (a hill climb HITT workout) plus some weights. On Friday after work I went and did an hour of spinning – following an instruction video on YouTube. It was really busy so I didn’t attempt weights. On Saturday before work again I went to a 30-minute spin class and then did 30 minutes of weights.

I’m focusing less on weights now and just trying to keep my strength up rather than build more muscle. My main focus is getting my fitness levels back up to improve cycling. I’m hoping to get out on the bike next week if the weather plays fair!

It feels good to get back in the swing of things. I’ve cut out alcohol which is helping my motivation levels but I’m still not doing great with sleep. I did want to go to the gym on Sunday but I was just too tired from working until 10pm on Saturday, then being back in at 7am Sunday for a full shift. This 6 day week has killed me off.

I’m busy at the end of next week, so I’m hoping to get in workouts on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!

One of the cool things about blogging is getting to try new things. Especially here on this fitness blog. Being quite into weight lifting, I’m a sucker for products packed with protein.

Protein drinks are usually more of a milkshake texture, so when ProWater emailed me about these drinks, I was more than curious.

They sent me 2 bottles of the stuff, each containing 20 grams of protein and only 90 calories per bottle. They sent me blueberry and red berries, though it also comes in citrus mint.

It also contains no sugar, carbs or caffeine – so it’s a great way of getting your protein in without the extra sugar, fat, and carbs that tend to come with protein shakes, bars, and other protein products.

ProWater is currently stocked in Superdrug and will soon be stocked in TK Maxx, so keep your eyes out!

Fitness Update // 10 mile ride

Woo, I have wonderful news. My kidneys are no longer broken. After last weeks update of nothingness, I have actually managed to do some form of exercise this week.

I didn’t do anything at the start of the week as I died of kidneys and had to take some time off work. By the end of the week, I was feeling better.

I made it to the gym on Saturday after work for a very quick workout. 30 minutes in total as I had stuffs to do.

Then on Sunday I went on a 10 mile bike ride and survived that. Kind of. I’m proper wank at cardio since I started focusing more on weights. My heart rate got up to 193bpm at one point. That hurt. A lot.

I burnt 836 calories in the hour and 10 mins though. Silver linings and all that.

Hopefully next week will be better. Need to log more than 2 workouts in a week. My instagram is lonely without all the gym selfies.

Sundried is a new brand to me, they represent the innovators, the thinkers and the dreamers. Their vision is to bring clothing to active people to help them achieve their goal.

They sent me one of their items to try out. They sent me this Tour Noir Vest, which is cut in a way to allow all types of movement. It’s quick drying and has mesh back detail allowing your skin to breath while banging out those intense workouts.

White isn’t usually a colour I’d pick in sports wear, but I really like this top, especially the back detail!

I was recently contacted by a company that I’ve never heard of before – Motion Nutrition.

Motion Nutrition offer a great selection of protein powders, workout aids, recovery powders and more – all using organic ingredients.

They sent me a bag of their Organic Raw Cacao Whey Protein, which has just 110 calories per service and 20.1g protein.

This couldn’t have come at a better time for me, as I’ve been trying to up my protein intake lately and added in a shake a day. On days off, I’ve been recreating a smoothie bowl and adding the protein in it.

The smoothie bowl below has 2 bananas, blueberries, raspberries and is topped with chia seeds, bee pollen, goji berries and cranberries. I love having this high protein low fat breakfast on my days off work. Keeps me gonig until I’ve done at the gym!

Weetabix have had on the go breakfast drinks out for a while. There were some featured in the July Degustabox, now they have brought out a new selection that are high in protein.

They come in three flavours:

  • Strawberry & Raspberry
  • Blueberry & Blackberry
  • Vanilla

They’re perfect for those mornings you don’t get chance to sit down and get a bowl of cereal. Complete with as much fuel as a bowl of Weetabix and milk, these added protein version have a massive 21g of protein per shake, which makes it a great drink to have before or after a workout.

The rest of the macros are around 3g fat and 20g carb with a total of 210 calories – though these do vary ever so slightly flavour to flavour.

Yushoi Snapea Rice Sticks

In the January 2016 Degustabox, there was a packet of salted snapea snacks from Yushoi.

Oh god, it was love at first bite and I hate the whole bag at once.

They recently contacted me to see if I wanted to try the rest of their flavours. Of course I was like YES YES.

They sent me various sizes of 4 flavours:

  • Sweet Chilli Lemon
  • Lightly Salted
  • Smoked Salt & Szechuan Pepper
  • Soy & Balsamic Vinegar

These snacks are a great alternative to crisps, they have less than 100 calories a serving and are high in protein. They taste very salty/flavourful if that’s what you look for in a salty snack. I can’t control myself around these though and keep eating them.

I think the Sweet Chilli Lemon ones might be my favourite flavour. I can’t pick a second because they’re all nice. I’ll have one packet of each please.

Most supermarkets stock these, I know you can get them in my local Tesco!

Fitness Update // Doing Better WOO



YES! This week has been amazing. I finally feeling motivated and happy and strong.

I went to the gym four times, Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and did a leg workout at home on Wednesday.

I also did 3 arm workouts at the gym and one leg workout and lots of abs over the week, so I’m finally getting back into weights which is what I’ve been banging on about for SO LONG but I’ve not actually been able to get into the groove.

I set a few goals last week, which were:

  • Each day either eat a 20g Arla Protein Yogurt or have a Protein Meal Replacement shake.
  • Track food on MyFitnessPal.
  • 3 workout sessions.
  • 2 of the workout sessions to be weight based.
  • Alcohol only on Tuesday and Sunday.

I didn’t achieve them all. There were a couple days where I didn’t have the protein shake/yogurt because it got late and I had planned on having it when I got hungry, but I didn’t get hungry. I also didn’t stick to the alcohol on only Tuesday and Sunday rule thing, though I was counting my calories with alcohol and sticking to mixers with diet coke, apart from on Tuesday when I went to a press event and drank prosecco and beer!

I did so well with the other goals though and managed to lose 4lbs!

So yes, I’m feeling really happy and positive about it. I’m going to keep those same goals for the next week and see what happens. Even if I don’t get every single one done, I do better than if I didn’t set them at all!

Doing the weights feels great, and I feel much more confident in my body already. I went to the gym on Easter Sunday and it was so quiet so managed to take some full body photos so I can see my progress.

10lbs to go!
